CREATING A SENSE of LIGHT & DARK: UNDERSTANDING TONE

A school holiday workshop. A studio-based workshop for teenagers to specifically teach the use of tone in enhancing drawing and painting. Learn to use light and shade (tone) to describe form and space, and create a sense of atmosphere. This workshop is primarily observational but the skills taught are also relevant to students interested in abstraction. There will be art historical and theoretical references and discussions. Exercises aim to provide understanding in: 

Drawing (using pastel, pencil and charcoal)

- see and understand light (tonal values) through drawing

- create and work with tonal scales

- compose and create a sense of space through tone

Painting (using acrylic)
- see and understand light (tonal values) in relation to painting

- establish an underpainting using tone

- create and work with tonal scales

- compose and create a sense of space by employing tone  

- use transparent colour, through glazing, to build tone and luminosity

 

All materials supplied.

BYO lunch, tea and coffee are supplied.
