ART HISTORY 2: part 1

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING AT?

This course is a continuation of the first course, Art History - Part 1: What are we looking at? We will continue our study of art history using a broad selection of art and artists as our models, as we focus our attention on their themes and concepts.

This course will address a broad range of ideas including art and landscape, from Monet’s Waterlilies to transient Land Art; the stylistic conventions of the French Salon; the changing political and social implications of the female body, and how artists mine their personal and emotional depths for their art, from Van Gogh’s Sunflower series to Kirchner’s street scenes. We will also examine the various avenues artists have pursued towards abstraction, from Kandinsky’s lyrical paintings to Barnett Newman’s colour field paintings.

In keeping with the tone of the first course, these classes will be conversational discussions where students are encouraged to share their ideas and interpretations, building on their visual analysis skills. Students will be empowered to engage with art that may be out of their personal comfort zones, to better understand the visual culture that we live within.

It is recommended, though not obligatory, that students complete the Art History - Part 1 before enrolling in this course.

This course is conducted entirely by ZOOM and you'll be emailed a link to join and follow.
