TONAL DRAWING

A Beginners Guide to Understanding Light & Shadow

with

LEIGH MARTIN

Have you ever felt frustrated having worked so hard on a drawing – only to find that the imagery still looks ‘flat’? Why is your imagery in your drawing still looking flat in appearance, lacking in depth. Perhaps the composition? Is it the proportions,  or is it the perspective? Some or all of these formal elements may play an integral part in why your drawing may appear to lack depth, but the most effective method of making your drawings appear three dimensional, is understanding how light logically works. If line drawing creates shapes and proportions, the handling of tone creates the form.

This course covers simple observational theories and simple techniques, built around how tone, light and shade work and can improve the illusion of form in your drawings you make, no matter the subject.
