This two-day workshop is open to all levels and will be a based on classical, traditional and academic approaches to painting the portrait. We will look at various tried and true techniques to analyse and build head studies leading to a final, refined portrait. This will include how to create believable features and proportions within a painting where the head reads as a 3D form on a 2D plane.

The course will include progressive instruction in the technical skills required when using oil paint, the blocking-in of basic structural form in addition to the use of tone, colour, and mark-making to achieve a believable representation.

This will be a creative, stimulating and rewarding workshop, offering you the skills to broaden your portrait painting experience and to continue an ongoing development.

Day 1:  Working from reference images/photos. This will include a visual deconstruction of the head, observing components that lead to successful painting. Students may bring their own images for this first day, or use images supplied by the tutor.

Day 2:  Observation from a life model, applying the first day's concepts and techniques to a real-time pose.
