DRAWING WITH LIGHT & SHADOW

During this workshop, we will explore the idea of chiaroscuro through the technique of subtractive drawing. Chiaroscuro is an effect created by using contrasting light and shadow on objects or figures to create a sense of volume and depth.

Using subtractive drawing we will work back into layers of charcoal using our erasers to reclaim the light areas and emphasise shadow. We will Initially create a series of smaller studies whilst getting familiar with our materials, then move onto a bigger portrait work.

This course is suitable for beginners or for those keen to expand their skill set.

All reference material will be supplied but if you prefer to choose your own portrait reference, please ensure that your photo is converted to black and white, has strong directional lighting and good tonal range.

Please see the list of materials to bring.
