This winter workshop is aimed at beginners and those who wish to rejuvenate their practice.

We will be working directly from the life model for the first 3 days through drawing and then extend these studies towards painting for the following 2 days.

Whether one is a conceptual artist, a painter of abstract paintings, or perhaps a realist painter, then drawing is an excellent means of sharpening ideas, bringing an extended focus to learning.

Drawing is at once intimate and immediate. It allowing for the realization of the expressive potential of ideas. Drawing also encourages reflection, thus deepening our understanding of creativity.

I believe that the most successful paintings are underpinned by drawing. My approach to teaching is both practical and experiential.

Starting with the idea that painting can be realised as drawing with a brush, students are guided to extend themselves into the painterly process. Allowing onesself the space to look intently and work with focus prepares the way for an authentic learning experience.

In this process the pencil or brush is an extension of the eye passing over the figure...not so much picture making as learning to see. The artist works from within to find the measure of things. Beyond measurement there is the ideal in art which we look for and desire in equal measure.
