THE VISUAL DIARY : an approach to drawing
Drawing in a visual diary or sketchbook is a time honoured tradition and is a place for the personal extension of techniques in tonal, cross hatching and water colour techniques. In this course students will acquire a deeper understanding of observational drawing and also develop a range of skills, approaches and techniques.
Drawing will be based on small, still life objects which will be provided. Before each session a demonstration of the technique being studied will take place. The initial sessions will concentrate on tonal drawing and cross hatching as techniques to describe form and space. Drawing media such as gesso and water colour will be introduced and demonstrated as the course progresses. Fabriano paper will be used to support this experimentation.
All work in this course will be on a small scale. Sketches and drawings by various artists will be looked at and discussed in conjunction with course work. Ideas and images developed in the Visual Diary may be further extended or used as a basis for future work in other disciplines.
