START-UP: BEGINNING TO DRAW & PAINT
It’s an exciting decision to embark on a drawing and painting course and this is never truer than in the first stages when there is a whole new world to discover.
This course is constructed to help you reconnect with the language of both drawing and painting. Aspects of observation and the processes of seeing are introduced.
You will progress at a gentle, manageable pace. We will look at line, tone, composition, perspective, colour and the mixing and application of paint. Through observation, you will be introduced to seeing the 'abstract' by way of pictorial structure, to issues of transparency, opacity, surface, depth, and space.
On completion of this course you will be able to draw and paint with greater confidence and will have practised the visual fundamentals should you wish to attend the course, Painting - L2.
Note: There's no need to bring all the materials on the list to the first session. Please bring pencils B, 2B, 4B, 6B. We will be going through the materials list in more depth during the first class.

I am loving being a part of the Thursday morning introduction to painting and drawing class. Kathy is an excellent teacher. E. John (2022)
Kathy creates a confident, curious and encouraging context, one that’s especially fun and welcoming for beginners and anyone returning to art-making after a long while. I thoroughly enjoyed plunging back in, and am keen to continue the journey. Jolisa Gracewood (2022)
I wanted to say how much I enjoyed Kathy Barber’s class. She was so professional and lovely. Must say I learned so much about which direction to go with my art in the future. Ann Trotman (2022)
I thought it would be lovely just to get back to some drawing and painting, which it was, but attending the course has brought so much more than that! Kathy is incredibly perceptive about the type of guidance each individual person needs to find and nurture their own voice through art. She intuitively steered our group past various stumbling blocks and kept encouraging us to keep our minds open as we experimented with new methods and mediums. She is so generous with her knowledge and experience, which allowed us all to make much progress over a short period. Our group also had a lot of fun along the way!
